Honda 2.3hp Outboard

First, I was disappointed to find out that this was actually made in China. When pulling the starter cord it often fires wrong and rips the cord out of your hand with a vengeance, often painfully. It's only annoying for me, but if there is a woman trying to start this thing, it could be a real problem. I don't mean to sound sexist, just trying to give a fair description. My girlfriend refuses to start this thing anymore. I was expecting it to be loud because it is air cooled, however it is still much louder than I was anticipating. It is as loud or louder than most two strokes. After an hour of putt putting around your clothes will smell like engine exhaust . This never happened on my Yamaha 2.3 that this replaced. It was shipped without oil in the engine (thankfully) , but included a quart of Honda oil. I put in the EXACT amount specified yet on the site gauge it now shows overfull by a large margin, regardless of how I tilt the engine. Adjusting idle was a little tricky since you can't pull the top cowling piece off and set it aside. It is attached by the starter cord!– – poor design. The top cowling is also held in place by one rubber fastener which I don't expect to last long in the sun. On the plus side it is lighter than what it replaced. It was also cheaper than the Yamaha 2.3 which was not the case 10 years ago when I purchased the Yamaha but was looking at the Honda. I suspect being made in China is the reason for that. iboats was great with fast, free shipping and I doubt you will find is cheaper anywhere else.

Took motor out of the box, filled with oil, filled with gas, followed instructions for starting, dry pulled two times and started on first pull. Looking forward to opening her up. Used on Walker Bay 8. Even at breakin speed pushed her along at a good speed. For that boat you definately need a tiller extension.

Been using this style motor for a long time and they run great and last a long time.

Pretty cheaply made. Plastic cover does not come off for oil filling. Oil filling is not easy 1) hard to get bigger fingers into the housing to remove filler cap 2) hard to fill with oil (had to make a special funnel hose arrangement) 3) accuracy of determining oil level is not great. Cover latching with a rubber strap is not the best. It seems to run okay so far, but 10 hours is a rather long break in time at very low throttle.
